Samsung UN65MU8000 is part of MU8000 series, the mid-tier of Samsung’s 2017 4K TV lineup. If we see it series, it is also a successor of UN65KS8000, a part of Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup. Nevertheless, since Samsung released QLED series, Samsung series 8 is not as top-tier of Samsung lineup. There are some major technologies that missing if compared to the predecessor UN65KS8000 and of course makes its performance is also not as good as the predecessor, especially about picture quality that produced. But even so, although not as great as the predecessor KS8000, Samsung UN65MU8000 still becomes a good option for you when you are searching a good TV with affordable price for mixed usage.
Still focus on HDR, Samsung UN65MU8000 is powered by 4K HDR Extreme engine for supporting HDR 10 Format. Additionally, for producing clear and detail 4K picture quality, there is UHD Remastering Engine as its image processor. On its panel, UN65MU8000 uses VA panel and Edge Lit LED backlight with local dimming technology called Precision Black. Combined to UHD Dimming, Triple Black Technology, Ultra Clear Panel, and Peak Illuminator Pro, this makes black level and contrast of UN65MU8000 is very deep and strong with bright peak brightness. Meanwhile, for delivering wide color gamut, it is no longer powered by quantum dot technology like the predecessor UN65KS8000 and as the instead, it is powered by 4K Color Drive Extreme technology. This is a bit disappointing considering its performance is not as great as quantum dot technology. Nevertheless, although not as great as the predecessor UN65KS8000 with QD technology, color of the picture produced by UN65MU8000 still look accurate.
Additionally, for handling motion blur and 24p movies, Samsung UN65MU8000 is powered by Motion Rate 240 based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. Additionally, there is also a great UHD Up-scaling engine behind it that allows you to enjoy any resolution video contents close to 4K quality sharply and clearly. And as smart TV platform, it features Tizen 2017 that powered by a quad core processor.

Performance of Samsung UN65MU8000
Overall, picture quality of Samsung UN65MU8000 is good for its class. Black level is very deep and black uniformity is good while contrast is also strong. And as we know, since black level and contrast is one of the most components of picture quality, this makes the picture displayed on the screen of UN65MU8000 looks stunningly. Black level of UN65MU8000 might not as dark as what reached by OLED TV, but at least it is darker than 0.05 nits as minimum recommendation of HDR 10 or even lower than 0.02 nits. This makes blacks of images looks very dark and darker color also looks very accurate, even when used in a dark room. Meanwhile, when inputted by HDR signal, detail of images in a dark scene or shadow looks very clear like what offered by HDR technology itself.
In other hand, although not as bright as the predecessor UN65KS8000, peak brightness of UN65MU8000 is also quite bright for SDR or HDR contents. This means when used in a room with a normal light, peak brightness is quite bright for displaying bright picture and maintaining the picture quality from glare, so color still looks accurate. But even so, although its peak brightness is above average, it is still not as bright as the predecessor KS8000 and still below 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation set by UHD alliance to get Ultra HD Premium Certification. This certainly makes its HDR performance is not as great as what offered by the predecessor UN65KS8000. Nevertheless, for its class, its HDR performance can be said great.
Moving on color performance, lack of quantum dot panel might have a big impact on color reproduction of Samsung UN65MU8000 and makes its color gamut is not as wide as what delivered by the predecessor. But even so, with 4K Color Drive Extreme as the instead, color of the picture displayed on the screen of UN65MU8000 still looks very accurate. It already support wide color gamut and can cover more than 90% of DCI P3 color space as the minimum recommendation of HDR 10. The result, color looks fairly well, even when displaying HDR contents. Additionally, 4K Color Drive Extreme technology behind it also can process 10 bit signal well. This means, it can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color that makes its color gradient looks very smooth. Some small color bandings might still be slight visible on darker color, but this is not a big issue for most people.
Like all models of Samsung TV lineup, UN65MU8000 is also equipped with great UHD Up-scaling engine. This allows you to enjoy contents with any resolution to near 4K quality. Considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K, of course this feature is very important. The result, no matter the resolution of the contents, even DVD movies with 480p resolution, it will look very detail and sharply in 4K quality. And of course when the source is 720p contents like from cable TV or 1080p like from Blu-Ray, the final images in 4K that resulted will looks sharper and clearer with a lot of small details preserved well.
The only major downside of Samsung UN65MU8000 is about its poor side viewing angle due it uses VA Panel as their panel technology. Started at 20 degrees off center and in front of the screen, the contrast look degraded and color will look faded. Blacks of images even look tend to grey. And the wider viewing angle, the picture degradation will be more noticeable. Nevertheless, considering it is a native characteristic of VA panel, it certainly is not alone. And as long as you don’t watch TV from side viewing angle, this should not be a problem.
Motion Handling and 24p Playback
Pixel response time of Samsung UN65MU8000 is very low even lower than the predecessor UN65KS8000. This course is good especially for displaying fast moving images like sport program or fast movies. The result, when you are watching fast moving images, the picture produced looks very smooth. Even behind the fast moving object, there is only a short trail and for most people with untrained eyes, this should not be noticeable. Meanwhile, when used for watching 24p movies, no matter it is 24p like Blu-Ray movies, via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV or even via 60p signals like movies from streaming media, the picture that displayed on its screen also looks very smooth with judder-free. Nevertheless, for removing judder without adding “soap opera effect”, the certain setting must be done like set “Auto Motion Plus” to Custom, “Judder Reduction” to “0”, and “Blur Reduction” also must be set to ”0”. Additionally, since UN65MU8000 is powered by Motion Rate 240 based native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, it certainly already supports 30/60 fps motion interpolation. This means it is able to interpolate lower frame rate content well.
Like most of mid to upper tier of LED TVs that available in the market, Samsung UN65MU8000 is equipped with 4 HDMI port and 3 USB Port as their major connectivity and its HDMI ports already support CEC, HDCP 2.2, Audio Return Channel, and others format. But even so, there is no AV (In) and Component (in) behind it, so if you have old devices where these ports are as their major connectivity, you need a converter to connect them on UN65MU8000. In addition to HDMI and USB ports, there are also RF In (Terrestrial), Ethernet, Built-in Wi-Fi, Digital Audio Out (optical) and more. Like the predecessor UN65KS8000, most of these ports are located on separated box called “One Connect Box Mini”. Meanwhile, no matter the source is 1080p, 4K, 4K + HDR, the input lag of Samsung UN65MU8000 is very low in game mode or even in PC mode. This means it is great when used for playing any kind of games. No matter it is casual game or fast paced games, it will feel very responsive.
Like other model of Samsung’s 2017 4K TV lineups, Samsung UN65MU8000 features Tizen OS as its smart TV platform and the performance is powered by a quad core processor. A bit different to last year version, in this version it comes with white them and nicer animation that makes its layout is more attractive. Nevertheless, it is not affect on the responsiveness and the speed. Navigating between different menus is still simple and feels responsive. Additionally, once an app is launched, the loading time is also very fast. Selecting between apps when multitasking also feels very responsive. The other advantage that offered is about the apps that provided where there are a lot of attractive and useful apps available. There are most popular apps like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Videos, and many more. Additionally, there are also Web Browser, Cloud Game, Samsung apps and contents store, Screen Mirroring, and many more. Essentially, Tizen OS is one of the best smart TV platforms in 2017 with simple navigation, responsive and fast performance, and also a lot of attractive apps provided.
Meanwhile, as the controller, Samsung UN65MU8000 uses “Samsung Smart Controller”. It is designed simple with few buttons but comfortable to use. This remote is also equipped with built-in microphone for Google Voice Search or Voice Navigation functionality. The other advantages, this remote can be functioned as a universal remote to control your other devices connected on your Samsung TV via HDMI ports.
